Record cold coming in this weekend. What do you do if your heating system stops working
A heating system can be confusing, more so when
it is not. There are a number of items
to check before you call for repairs, At least 25% of the service calls we receive,
are able to be diagnosed without a visit to a customer’s home. Common sense
fixes once you know what to look for. Here are the common items to check before
calling your service technicians.
- Oil Heat- Check the oil gauge
to make sure it reads at least 1/8. Oil tanks as they age, may accumulate
sludge, blocking oil flow to the burner. If you run out of oil, the burner
generally needs to be purged of air before effectively refiring.
- Be sure your thermostat is set
correctly. A lot of us now have programmable thermostats which frankly,
can cause a lot of confusion.
- On your thermostats, Check to
be sure the mode is on “Heat” rather than on “Cool.”
- Check the temperature you have
the heat set to. Increase to at least 4 degrees above the illuminated setting
so the system asks for additional heat.
- Check your system filters. If the
filters are clogged, the system will shut down prematurely, rather than
overheat.
- If you think your system has
overheated, please call a professional rather than chance causing a fire. .
- If you smell burning, please call right away, rather than risking a fire.
