The right Solution for a Finished Basement

Brian Nagle  September 22, 2017 12:25 PM

To correctly finish a basement, the correct installation of a HVAC system has to be part of the solution. Many homeowners don't properly calculate what the Heat and Cooling loads are for the finished basement. If you have a boiler installed on the basement level, you can often install an additional zone of baseboard heating for the finished basement. This is dependent on the size of the space as well as the feasibility of running piping. What if you heat with a warm air furnace? And what about air conditioning?
Warm Air Furnaces. If you are conditioning only a small bedroom you may be able to run a small duct into the bedroom. In many to today's homes, the basement is the footprint of the floor above, and requires too much capacity to be be able to borrow from the existing system design without siphoning off performance from the floor(s) above.
Consider today's  better ductless systems as a solution to solve the dilemma. The top tier manufacturers make attractive units, including floor mounts, slim ducts, and cassettes, as well as traditional and designer series wall mounted units. The new systems provide heat down to -13F and can heat and cool a space from startup in less than 10 minutes. Typical 12000 BTU units (1 ton) can service up to 500 sq ft of basement space with 8 ft ceilings. These new systems will process tremendous amounts of humidity as well. These units are available in sizes starting as small as 6000 BTU's. For a no cost quote on Long Island, contact Brian Nagle at True Mechanical.
