Pennywise and Pound Foolish Importance of Service Contracts

Brian Nagle  2:25PM February 2nd, 2017

A customer called looking for a quote on replacing their boiler. This particular boiler is a very high efficiency gas fired condensing boiler, and is only 8 years old. The story unfolded after being in the house for 15 minutes. This particular boiler requires the skill set of a highly skilled technician to diagnose and work on. The home is 5000 sq ft, hydronic heating with 7 zones and thermostats. My conversation with the homeowner uncovered several issues. It turns out the home had been without heat for more than 2 weeks. The homeowner had 4 different companies come in to service the equipment, without having a service contract, and without an effective result. The one thing the homeowner did correctly, was to call the boiler manufacturer, to find a company, such as True Mechanical,  approved and qualified by the manufacturer to properly service their boilers. The moral of the story, is when you make the largest expenditure of your life in your home, or homes, buy some insurance ( a service contract) on the mechanical systems for your home.
True Mechanical has spent 40 years building a solid reputation. We didn't see the need to sell this customer a new boiler, when the correct solution is a proper technician tuning it up and giving it another 10-15 years worth of optimal use. The cost of a comprehensive service contract is 5-10% of the replacement cost of the equipment.

5 Efficient and Cost effective ways to maintain your comfort and sanity this winter.

5.Lower your thermostat

keeping the temperature down and wearing a sweater or sweatshirt is more economical and healthier. The higher the temperature, the drier your indoor air. Dry air allows airborne contaminants to penetrate our immune systems, as well as making us feel colder. Save money and maintain your health.

4.Water pots on the radiator

Grab a pot for your bedrooms or living areas. Fill 3/4 of the pot and then refill when it runs low, usually every few days. Inexpensive since its just the cost of the water.

3.The damp towel technique

Simply place a damp hand towel over a portion of the heat vent in the room. Warm air circulating through the heating system will evaporate the moisture from the towel for a more humid atmosphere.

2.Put water containers on radiators

Place pots, kettles, pans or other vessels with water on heating ducts, hot air registers, and or radiators. The water evaporates into the air thus helping fix dry air. A cast iron kettle on a woodstove is a proven technique too. For more efficacy, place a partially open fish tank on a good location.

When the above methods that have been handed down since the days of coal heat just don't work for you, look to the #1 solution.

1.Install a whole house humidifier.

For most households, a whole home humidifier solution will provide the best results. When you have ducts or not, there is a whole home humidifier that's right for your application. Installation and operating costs vary, but installing a whole home system allows you to turn down the heat and still feel perfectly comfortable.

Make your Home part of Your New Years Resolutions

Brian Nagle True Mechanical  January 03, 2017 11:50AM

Don’t Forget Your Home in your HVAC New Year’s Resolutions.  From the lowest to highest investment every one of these gets you a 100% or better return on Your investment

Check Your Air Filters Regularly

Your HVAC system’s air filters when clogged cause all sorts of issues. The equipment when not getting proper airflow cycles much more than necessary. Cycle is turning on and off, and in this case, trying to compensate for the limited air flow. Cycling also uses more energy than necessary, so regular filter changes lower your energy usage. In addition when clogged the airborne contaminants no longer get captured in the filter media.Your home becomes dusty. Changing the filter media regularly allows proper air flow capturing those dusty particulate. Inexpensive and simple, just check these air filters each month, and replace them as necessary.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat helps you maintain temperature better than the traditional thermostat, reducing your energy use. Typically these have 4 settings a day, which you can adjust to your lifestyle. For example, you can lower the temperature while you are at work, and have it programmed to come on 45 minutes prior to getting home. With the variety and # of settings a day, you don't have to remember to adjust the thermostat any longer, which will save you hundreds over a heating or cooling season.

Have your HVAC system serviced twice a year.
The system is mechanical and requires regular maintenance to make sure it’s in good operating and working order. By having a professional service your equipment, potential problems can be identified early, fixed quickly before requiring a full replacement. having a professional like True Mechanical Corp in Bohemia perform the maintenance, this helps your HVAC system perform better, last longer and save you energy ihn the process, leading to lower utility bills.

Indoor Air Quality Investments for your System

Installation of a whole house  humidifier and system air filtration unit improves the overall (IAQ)indoor air quality, reducing airborne allergens. This translates into lowering the risk of respiratory health issues and improving problems and increasing comfort. With an air purifier or an air cleaner, you can make sure that allergens and contaminants that are floating in your home are caught and removed. The humidifier allows you to lowering your heating temperature and still feel comfortable. This reduces energy usage and saves you money as well.

New Years Eve Issues

Brian Nagle True Mechanical Corp 12/30/2016 11:30AM

When you live in such a volatile winter climate, having a furnace breakdown is much more than an inconvenience—it’s an emergency. Fortunately, you have our team on your side to help resolve any gas or electric heating system issue you may run into.

We’ll help get your furnace get back to working as effectively and efficiently as possible. We also can recommend high efficiency replacement systems if your's has reached the end of its lifespan. How can you tell if your furnace is in trouble, though?

Your Furnace no longer sufficiently heats Your Home
One sign of needing repairs or replacement is your heater isn’t working adequately. When you are spending more money to heat your home with a system that can’t heat the way it used to.There are a several different reasons this may be happening, which we’ll be happy to go over with you.

You’re Getting Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home
Have you noticed cold spots in various rooms, even with the heating running? It’s time to seek a professional evaluation if this is happening. There may be several causes, especially if your system is zoned. if your system is older than 15 years or you have had visits from animals where ductwork is, your ductwork may have been breached or simply, leaking.

Your energy bills and usage is getting higher
Are your energy bills significantly higher than they have been in recent memory? If it’s much colder this winter than it has been in the past few years, that's one reason. If not, and you are using your furnace or boiler much more than you were, there should be no reason for this. A simple reason, may be a clogged filter, or it may be something more serious. The older the system gets, the harder it has to work to maintain temperature, with resulting higher heating bills for you.

Women Breaking the Glass Ceiling in HVAC.

Brian Nagle December 28, 2016 12:00 PM

The atmosphere in the trades is changing quickly. A great article by Nicole Krawcke in one of our trades publications, ACHRNEWS from December 19th, talks about the changing landscape and the opportunity that presents. http://www.achrnews.com/articles/134049-women-shattering-hvacs-glass-ceiling

Nicole Krawcke is Business Management Editor. She can be contacted at 248-244-6475 or nicolekrawcke@achrnews.com. Nicole is responsible for covering a range of business management topics in relation to the HVAC industry, producing the monthly contractor profile feature, and running the annual Best Contractor to Work For contest. She has five years of writing and editing experience and holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University.

As we have seen technology change the type of jobs available, one area where a profound need for skilled employees is in the trades. Equipment is being developed that is ever more sophisticated, fewer people are entering trade schools for training, existing employees are retiring and the need for qualified loyal employees is as great as ever. The heating and air conditioning business is looking for more employees to meet the ever growing demand.

Have you Noticed Nose Bleeds in the past few days ?

Brian Nagle      December 27, 2016 1:22pm

The first step is to measure your humidity. When the outside temperature drops below 30F the inside air gets much drier, leading to nose bleeds, static shock, feeling colder with the thermostat raised. This is generally a symptom of too little humidity.  The final step is to choose the right solution In previous decades,  we used to fill pans up with water and put them on top of near the radiators to add moisture to the rooms, or purchase small individual room humidifiers. Partially effective, but high maintenance, While you can still do either of the above, the wiser choice is to add a whole home humidifier to provide the proper level of moisture. Aprilaire makes great whole home humidifiers, with models built for every type of heating application. .

There are benefits beyond the obvious. Installing a whole house humidifier into your home can help you in many ways:
Your Health

Many allergens and viruses grow in lower-humidity environments, which contributes to the flu, colds, and other respiratory issues. And a lack of humidity creating an very dry home can make people more likely to catching an infection..Adding moisture (humidity) into your home can reduce the risk of catching one of these diseases.
.
Your home’s Preservation
A dry home can cause damage to many in home items;  starting with wood doors, floors, cabinets, furniture, pianos and guitars, sensitive electronics. A sensible investment generating the proper levels of humidity will save you thousands later.

Utility cost savings

Proper levels of humidity will allow you to lower your thermostat without feeling any discomfort. Estimates are for every 1 degree you can lower your thermostat, you are saving almost 4%.on heating costs.

These whole home systems are now available for hydronic heat, forced air heat, radiant heat,  baseboard and radiators.  So many reason to install.

Please take a look at the short video we have included.
