As winter rolls in, you will see an increased utility usage resulting in higher heating cost. You can minimize the effect by taking the appropriate actions to prepare it for the winter. A Heat Pump System -If your home is heated or cooled using a heat pump there are several steps that you should take in order to prepare your heat pump for winter. You want to be sure the condenser is unobstructed without a covering so that air can circulate properly around it without over heating it. Keep the area free from any encumbrances so that parts can move freely. Having your system serviced before the winter is highly recommended.

Thermostat- You should make sure that your thermostat is functioning on heat mode prior to the heating season as well. If your thermostat uses batteries you should make sure the batteries are still good. Duct Systems -You should have your duct work professionally cleaned from time to time, maintaining optimal indoor air quality.

Five signs your heating Equipment needs updating

We’ve have already discussed the advantages to upgrading to a high efficiency heat pump system, central or Ductless. If you already have a central forced hot air or boiler system, how do you determine if it’s time to replace it. A few questions can help determine the answer if you should repair or replace.

1) What is the system’s age?

Systems generally last 15-20 years before the frequency of repairs justify the systems replacement. If your equipment is over 15 years old retirement is looming. The prudent customer knows, the best time to replace your heating system is not when it fails suddenly in the middle of winter, but when you have options about its replacement.

2) The next question; are you spending more to heat your home or business?

As your heating system ages, it begins to run less efficiently. Does it run more frequently to maintain the temperature, and is it using more fuel to provide the same warmth? This is a valid sign a high efficiency alternative is wise to look at.

3) What are the cost of repairs?

Heating equipment as does other mechanical equipment, frequently need more repairs as they get older. Most equipment breakdown more regularly in the last year or two of their life, so if you are experiencing this, be alert that your heating system may be rounding the final turn.

4) Does your equipment make unusual noises?

The easiest way to measure humidity is to buy a Hygrometer. Hygrometers measure humidity from 0% (dry) to 100% (when any more moisture comes out as precipitation or fog.) Relative Humidity (RH) can change throughout the day. Colder air holds less moisture, so the RH level will normally be higher at night. you can purchase these at retail stores, hardware or home improvement stores.
