Tips to Prepare Your HVAC for Winter

As winter rolls in, you will see an increased utility usage resulting in higher heating cost. You can minimize the effect by taking the appropriate actions to prepare it for the winter. Preparing your HVAC for winter can possibly lower your utility usage, lower your bill, and extend  your systems life.

A Heat Pump System -If your home is heated or cooled using a heat pump there are several steps that you should take in order to prepare your heat pump for winter. You want to be sure the condenser is unobstructed without a covering so that air can circulate properly around it without over heating it.  Keep the area free from any encumbrances so that parts can move freely. Having your system serviced before the winter is highly recommended.

Thermostat- You should make sure that your thermostat is functioning on heat mode prior to the heating season as well. If your thermostat uses batteries you should make sure the batteries are still good.  The newer thermostats with programmable capabilities do a wonderful job of maintaining accurate temperatures, reducing cycling and saving on utility costs .
Duct Systems -You should have your duct work professionally cleaned from time to time, maintaining optimal indoor air quality.
Indoor Air Quality -You should start with your air filters, maintaining a regular cleaning or replacement schedule. Add humidification to this list as well to keep colds and flu viruses from spreading through your home.
