Don't be left out in the Cold this winter

Numerous studies have shown that death rates peak this time of year. Blood pressure increases during the winter, and, by some reckonings, 70% of the wintertime increase in the death rate can be traced back to heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular causes of death. And, of course, flu season is a winter event, and flu viruses spread more readily once the air is dry and chilly.

Now Winter darkness, in a literal sense, may make matters worse. Sun-exposed skin makes vitamin D, a vitamin that seems to have all kinds of health benefits. During the winter, when days are short and the sun is at a low angle, levels of the vitamin in the body tend to dip. Cold temperatures and low vitamin D levels: that may be a bad combination.

The above is from Harvard Health Letter Out in the Cold January 2010

One item that is not in dispute is that colds and flu are most frequent in the winter. Many studies have shown a correlation between frequency of colds, Flu and Viruses, to lack of humidity causing our immune systems to weaken during the winter months. In warmer weather we are able to fight off airborne allergens, but with colder weather we need every ounce of moisture we can find. The end result, think of an unsecure border, where any thing moist is able to penetrate our sinuses and lungs, leaving us essentially defenseless.

The news is not all bad. Besides a medicine cabinet of cold and flu remedies, think of a more strategic approach. Add a professional humidifier installation to your home.Raising the relative humidity in your home allows a lower setting on your thermostat, helps your immune system defense response, and allows you to live and function in a more comfortable environment. If you have a ducted system, we have an Aprilaire humidifier for almost all applications. If you have a boiler and no ducts, we can install a steam humidifier to serve the whole home as well. Properly installed, steam humidifiers service most homes, no matter what the size.
