Every New Homeowner Wants To Save Money

September 27, 2017 2:15pm  Brian Nagle
As a new homeowner, you will be filled with excitement, but you must accept the amount of responsibility you will now face.  Many new home buyers only see the purchase price and not the maintenance cost required to out themselves in the best financial situation possible.
A few items to consider

Improvement and Maintenance

When you move into a new home, you definitely want it to be picture perfect, but there is a reality check. This is just the start of your relationship with your new home, so there will be necessary upgrades and repairs you will want to or have to make over time.  Remember, this is your 1st home, so be enthusiastic but grounded.

Check your heating and air conditioning system.

This may seem very basic, but by checking your HVAC system will save you money in the long term. One item often overlooked are maintenance contracts. your HVAC system is the 3rd largest expenditure behind the home and kitchen. Insuring it through a maintenance contract for around a dollar a day is the cheapest insurance you can purchase.

Do It Yourself Projects

Small projects like painting, cabinet building, etc. accomplish two things; 1) sense of accomplishment and 2) saving you money.
Checklist Items
You should develop a checklist that will help you keep up-to-date with maintenance tasks. keeping the list up to date , you can see what needs to be done to extend the life of home items.

Energy Efficiency

Investing in making your new home, making it more energy efficient will definitely save you money in your first year’s utility bills, as well as long term.  In addition to saving on utility bills and being environmentally conscious, you can also receive certain energy rebates for upgrading to energy efficient appliances, solar panels, geothermal, programmable thermostats insulation, etc. There is a wide selection of windows, insulation, and even water heaters that will be able to reduce your energy usage, in turn adding value to your home.
Being a new homeowner is a great accomplishment and investment, so make sure to get the most out of your new home by cutting some costs as well as creating value.
