5 ways to not go broke this winter.

5 Ways to get through the next 100 days without going broke.
5 ways to save on your heating costs starting today
It's officially winter and the majority of the country has already seen colder weather than normal. The next 100 days doesn't look so warm either.
What to do to stay warm without going broke? Five ideas to put to work now:
1) Check your filters. if they are dirty change them. Clogged filters cause your equipment to run more often (cycle) than it should.
2) Have your equipment professionally tuned up. Like any mechanical equipment the better tuned the less fuel is required to gain maximum performance.
3) On sunny days, open the blinds and curtains to let the sun in. If the front of your home has a southerly orientation, (faces south) you can gain a lot of warmth during the day light hours. After sundown, close the blinds, drapes and curtains to minimize heat loss.
4) Check the drafts around windows and doorways to see where you are losing heat. You can check with a simple test. Light a candle near the window, door, etc, and see how the flame moves. If it moves towards the window, seal that up with caulking or a covering to stop the air leaking out. Any air leakage is simply wasted fuel dollars.
5) Increase the humidity. Humidity levels of 40-50% allow you to lower the thermostat setting without feeling deprived and uncomfortable (too cold). Along these lines, add a layer or two of clothing, so you don't feel the lower temperature.
