Are You in the Loop? Geothermal Open Loop vs. Closed Loop Systems Going green and eliminating fossil fuel systems.
One of the earliest considerations for your Geo thermal System is Open vs Closed Loop. There are significant distinctions in the installation and operating costs of each.
Closed Loop System
A closed loop system is like it sounds: Consists of underground piping loops that are filled with a liquid slurry similar to a dense anti-freeze that transfers the temperature of the ground 53-55F to the geothermal heat pump system. Closed ground loop systems are typically installed vertically or horizontally depending on the yard size. A vertical ground loop is the most common installation on Long Island as it requires minimal space. Our drilling contractor drills the boreholes which run about 5 inch in diameter to fit the necessary piping to a depth of 200-500 feet. Some rural homes with much larger yards have the acreage to install horizontal loop system.
Open Loop System
The primary difference between open and closed looped systems is the use of ground water. An open loop system although less expensive, is less common, and requires an ample source of ground water. An open loop system is connected directly to a ground water source such as a well or pond and directly pumps the water into a building to the heat pump unit where it is used for heating and cooling. Although The installation cost of an open loop geothermal system is less expensive to drill, areas of Long island typically have a high mineral content which contributes to a higher frequency of maintenance of the pumps.
